OUR STORY

Rachel Balkwill leans up against the old Harcliff Farms Cattle cattle trailer with the Balkwill family name on the side with a worn out image of a holstien cow

Hello and welcome to Harcliff Farms North! Harcliff Farms North is run and operated by myself, Rachel Balkwill, with the help of my amazing farming family, Mark, Tracy and Ben. We are a relatively new market garden startup entering into our third growing season. Our vegetables are grown and harvested from our gardens out in Ennismore, Ontario, with a focus on natural, sustainable growing principles. You can find our vegetables sold at our seasonal roadside farm stand up in beautiful Buckhorn, Ontario along with a few other favourite local goodies.

Farming has always been a constant in my life. With my family originally having operated a dairy farm back in Essex County, and us always having a bountiful garden – which we were able to freeze and can many delicious vegetables and fruits from – I have always known and had a respect for where my food comes from. Growing up in a farming community was a source of peace and happiness for myself too. It wasn’t until I was removed from my agriculture roots, working in the corporate, urban world that I realized something was drastically missing in my life. So, in 2019 I decided to quit my 9-5 job, change careers, move up north to be with my family again and go back to school for Sustainable Agriculture at Fleming College.

Fast forward a couple years later, I am paying homage to the past generations who came before me by laying down my own agriculture roots. Now, I'm sharing my love and knowledge for home grown, local, fresh foods with my community!

*Please know that as of 2023 we are also currently transitioning to our new growing home base in Omemee in The City of Kawartha Lakes, but we still continue to grow on our current plots Ennismore, while running the Buckhorn farm stand and our newly formed Flex - Pay As You Go CSA program.
